To most people, the "Netherlands Antilles" means the "ABC" islands of Aruba, Bonaire and Curacao. Located just off the coast of South America, these Dutch controlled islands are far enough south that they are considered predictably safe destinations for trips planned during hurricane season - June through November. Each of the "ABC" islands has its own special flavor. Aruba is a very popular destination, with many hotels, restaurants and great beaches. Bonaire is less slightly developed, while Curacao is the seat of government for the Netherlands Antilles. The islands of Saba, Statia and St. Maarten are also part of the Netherlands Antilles (Dutch West Indies). Statia is a much quieter destination and Saba, the top of an extinct volcano with no beaches, is a world class diving destination. St. Maarten is actually half of an island; the other half, St. Martin, is controlled by the French and is part of the French West Indies.
