Situated in the centre of Italy, Umbria is a somewhat small region, the only one in central Italy without a coastline. It belongs to the Tyrrhenian side of the peninsula and borders with the Marches to the north-east and east, with Latium to the south and Tuscany to the west and north-west. It has the fourth lowest population of all the Italian regions (only Basilicata, Molise and Valle d'Aosta have fewer inhabitants) while the density of population is about half the Italian average.

History. Morphologically, Umbria consists of mountains (29%) and hills (71%). Orvieto rises up on a crag of tufa 80 metres high, which dominates the country plain below. The ash deposits from the eruptions of ancient volcanoes created the "crag". The rivers and the rain eroded the sides of the "crag" until it reached its present day imposing aspect.

Orvieto is beautiful and it is rich with an enviable artistic and cultural heritage. Orvieto is also at the centre of an important communication network of roads and railways. Traditional agricultural activities especially those involved in the wine and the handicraft industry (ceramics, woodwork, wrought iron, and lace making) are renowned for the high quality of the products

Orvieto also organizes important events, supported by its prominent receptive structure and nevertheless possesses all the necessary elements for economic development and the satisfaction of the visitors. Brief History - The territory of Orvieto has been populated since the Bronze and Iron Ages, which can be proven by the numerous archaeo ... Read More...
