Tuscany is the fifth largest region in Italy. Wedged deeply like a triangle in the heart of Italy, it constitutes a transitional, area between the Po Delta and Liguria, which are highly industrialized, and those Italian regions which are still principally agricultural. It stretches over the western side of the Apennines and includes the islands of the Tuscan archipelago. It lies on the sea to the west and south-west and borders with Liguria to the north-west, Emilia-Romagna to the north, the Marches and Umbria to the east, and Latium to the south-east.

San Piero a Sieve in Mugello Valley, Province of Florence, Tuscany

 

The municipality of S. Piero a Sieve, in the center of the Mugello valley, is located at 210 metres above sea level on the right bank of the Sieve river, covers an area of 36.63 sq kms and has a population of approximately 3,800 inhabitants.

 

It is situated along the state road SS 65 of the Futa which joins Florence and Bologna, and is about 25 kms from the Tuscan capital. The ancient urban agglomerate of San Piero developed during the 11th century, then grew and became important during the Medici times.
