Durante il Medioevo fu un importante mercatale sviluppatosi lungo la strada per il Valdarno. I numerosi castelli e pievi nei dintorni sono testimonianza di un’intensa e prospera attività agricola e commerciale. Tra i castelli, tutti di impianto medievale, sono particolarmente interessanti quello di Vertine, quello di Meleto con due imponenti torri angolari rotonde, quello di Barbischio e soprattutto il castello di Brolio. Sulle mura e i bastioni che lo circondano corre un camminamento di ronda da cui si gode un bellissimo panorama del Chianti e della campagna senese. Il castello, completamente distrutto nel 1478, fu ricostruito nel secolo scorso per volere di Bettino Ricasoli.
A meno di 1 Km. da Gaiole è da visitare la bella pieve romanica di Spaltenna mentre, sulla strada per il Valdarno, immersa nel verde di abeti secolari, merita una sosta la Badia a Coltibuono. Beautiful Churches and Museums in Quartiere di Santa Croce, Florence
PALAZZO VECCHIO AND PIAZZA DELLA SIGNORIA
This is the most important civil building in the city; construction, to plans by Arnolfo di Cambio, was begun in 1299. It was the seat of the Priori delle Arti, of the Signoria and the ducal residence; over the centuries it was remodelled several times. The 14th century courtyard, graced with the fountain with the "putto", a copy of Verrocchio's original, was later modified by Michelozzo. Inside, it is worth seeing the Salone dei Cinquecento, the study of Francesco I, the room of the Elements and the Sala dei Gigli.
The Loggia della Signoria or "dei Lanzi" overlooks the square; here there are several important statues including "Perseus" by Cellini and the "Rape of the Sabine Women" by Giambologna. Works by important 20th century artists are housed in the Raccolta d'Arte Contemporanea A. della Ragione, which is also located in Piazza della Signoria.
