Tuscany is the fifth largest region in Italy. Wedged deeply like a triangle in the heart of Italy, it constitutes a transitional, area between the Po Delta and Liguria, which are highly industrialized, and those Italian regions which are still principally agricultural. It stretches over the western side of the Apennines and includes the islands of the Tuscan archipelago. It lies on the sea to the west and south-west and borders with Liguria to the north-west, Emilia-Romagna to the north, the Marches and Umbria to the east, and Latium to the south-east.
Its limits are clearly defined to the north but less evident to the east, crossing the main ridge of the Tusco-Emilian Apennines and taking in the upper Val Tiberina, becoming even more uncertain to the south-east and south where they appear to be justified only for historical, linguistic and generally cultural reasons.

La casa e il palazzo. Dal materiale costruttivo in vista all'intonaco - Firenze in Toscana
Nella edilizia fiorentina, la casa a schiera con fronte stretta e sviluppo longitudinale, resta il tipo fondamentale del tessuto urbano. Nel Seicento si diffonde la soluzione di rivestire d'intonaco le facciate delle case che in precedenza erano anche in mattoni a vista con giunti stilati. E' una conferma del mutamento di gusto materico e dei valori tettonici della parete. Aumenta la sporgenza della gronda del tetto (probabilmente anche per proteggere le facciate intonacate) attraverso l'introduzione sia di una modanatura a quarto di cerchio convesso che forma una mensola continua alla conclusione del muro di facciata, sia di travetti di legno sotto quelli sporgenti della copertura e sempre con funzione statica di mensola. In ville e palazzi ha una certa diffusione anche la soluzione di contrarre l'aggetto della gronda per celare i travetti con un involucro posticcio in forma di cavetto che realizza una continuità della parete sino alla linea del tetto.
