Tuscany is the fifth largest region in Italy. Wedged deeply like a triangle in the heart of Italy, it constitutes a transitional, area between the Po Delta and Liguria, which are highly industrialized, and those Italian regions which are still principally agricultural. It stretches over the western side of the Apennines and includes the islands of the Tuscan archipelago. It lies on the sea to the west and south-west and borders with Liguria to the north-west, Emilia-Romagna to the north, the Marches and Umbria to the east, and Latium to the south-east.
Its limits are clearly defined to the north but less evident to the east, crossing the main ridge of the Tusco-Emilian Apennines and taking in the upper Val Tiberina, becoming even more uncertain to the south-east and south where they appear to be justified only for historical, linguistic and generally cultural reasons.

Fortezza Nuova e Giardino Rosselmini-Scotto - Pisa in Toscana
In quest’area correva già un tratto delle mura medievali che, attraverso un ponte fortificato, arrivava all’angolo sud-est della città. In esso si apriva la Porta di San Marco, ancora visibile all’interno di una successiva fortificazione. Dopo la prima conquista di Pisa avvenuta nel 1409 i fiorentini costruirono un grande baluardo quadrato all’esterno della porta, che collegarono poi all’Arno mediante un muro con torri circolari, che ancora oggi corre lungo il fiume. Tale intervento, terminato nel 1468, avvenne presumibilmente su piani a cui collaborò anche Filippo Brunelleschi.
La fortificazione, in parte distrutta nelle vicende che precedettero e accompagnarono la seconda conquista fiorentina del 1509, fu restaurata ed ampliata negli anni immediatamente successivi sotto la direzione di Giuliano da San Gallo, che fece edificare un potente sistema di bastioni intorno alla torre quadrata; si trattò di una delle prime applicazioni in Italia di un nuovo sistema difensivo che teneva co ...
