Situated in Mediterranean Europe, Italy has land frontiers with France in the north-west, Switzerland and Austria in the north and Slovenia in the north-east. The peninsula is surrounded by the Ligurian Sea, the Sardinian Sea and the Tyrrhenian Sea in the west, the Sicilian Sea and the Ionian Sea in the south and the Adriatic Sea in the east. Italian is the language of the majority of the population but there are minorities speaking German, French, Slovene and Ladino.
There is a great deal of variety in the landscape in Italy, although it is characterized predominantly by two mountain chains: the Alps and the Apennines. The former extends over 600 miles from east to west. It consists of great massifs in the western sector, with peaks rising to over 14,000 feet, including Monte Bianco (Mont Blanc), Monte Rosa and Cervino (the Matterhorn). Arpino - Frosinone nel Lazio
La città è ubicata su due colli, uno orientale (Civita Vecchia), l’altro occidentale (Civita Falconara). Ambedue i colli erano circondati da mura poligonali che si ritengono risalire all’VII°-VI° secolo a.C. Lo storico Clavelli, nel 1623, affermava che la città di Arpino era antica di 4.669 anni e che fosse stata fondata dai Volsci. Cicerone, uno dei figli più illustri della città, diceva che Arpino venne fondata dalle popolazioni locali confinanti con i Sanniti. Nel 305 a.C., assieme a Sora, la città passò sotto il dominio di Roma. Nel 1076 il signore locale Laudone ne fece donazione al Monastero di Montecassino e dopo essere passata in proprietà alle famiglie Pescara, fino al 1580, e Boncompagni, fino al 1796, la città fu reintegrata nel Regno Borbonico. Arpino è entrata nella storia universale grazie alle prestigiose figure di alcuni suoi cittadini, da Caio Mario a Marco Tullio Cicerone, da Marco Vipsiano Agrippa a Giuseppe Cesari (detto il Cavalier d’Arpino).
