Piedmont lies in a peripherical position with respect to the rest of Italy but its relative proximity to the sea and contact with France and Switzerland have, over the centuries, led to the creation of an important commercial transit network which has favoured its present economic development.
This is the largest region of continental Italy, second only to Sicily. Its density of 174 inhabitants per sq km. makes it the fifth most densely populated region in Italy, and slightly under the national average.
The Italian regions which border with Piedmont are Valle d'Aosta to the northwest, Lombardy to the east, Emilia-Romagna to the southeast and Liguria to the south.

Gaudenzio Ferrari - Vercelli in Piemonte
Gaudenzio Ferrari (1471/75 – 1546) gilt als der bedeutendste Vertreter der Piemonteser Schule der Malerei des 16. Jahrhunderts. Seine Reisen in die Lombardei und nach Mittelitalien trugen dazu bei, seinen sehr persönlichen Stil zu verfeinern und es ist ihm auch gelungen, die für Da Vinci typischen Züge der lombardischen Malerei mit den neuen Strömungen der Renaissance in einer äußerst originellen und unverwechselbaren Neuinterpretation miteinander zu verschmelzen. Zwar ist Valduggia Ferraris Geburtsort, aber hier findet man nur sehr wenige Spuren seines Schaffens: Eine Freskenmalerei für eine Krippe in der Pfarrkirche San Giorgio und einige Fresken in der nahen „Cappella di San Rocco“. Außer der Provinz Vercelli war Gaudenzio Ferrari auch im übrigen Norditalien tätig, so zum Beispiel in Mailand, wo er sich 1539 niederließ, aber auch in Novara, Saronno, Como und Bergamo.
