Piedmont lies in a peripherical position with respect to the rest of Italy but its relative proximity to the sea and contact with France and Switzerland have, over the centuries, led to the creation of an important commercial transit network which has favoured its present economic development.
This is the largest region of continental Italy, second only to Sicily. Its density of 174 inhabitants per sq km. makes it the fifth most densely populated region in Italy, and slightly under the national average.
The Italian regions which border with Piedmont are Valle d'Aosta to the northwest, Lombardy to the east, Emilia-Romagna to the southeast and Liguria to the south.

Parco naturale lame del Sesia - Vercelli in Piemonte
Le "lame" sono formazioni di palude derivate dalle anse abbandonate dal fiume che ha modificato il proprio corso. Quest'oasi naturale contrasta nettamente con il paesaggio circostante caratterizzato dalla monocoltura del riso. Qui, infatti, è il regno dei canneti, dei gialli nannufari sulle acque ferme delle lame, e dei salici sulle sponde. Si tratta di un habitat ideale soprattutto per l'avifauna acquatica: aironi, garzette, nitticore, cormorani e alcune rarità quali la spatola e l'ibis sacro. Ad Albano Vercellese, sede dell'Ente di gestione, il Museo Ornitologico delle Lame del Sesia espone circa 500 esemplari di fauna selvatica e ha sezioni dedicate a botanica, geologia ed entomologia.
