Piedmont lies in a peripherical position with respect to the rest of Italy but its relative proximity to the sea and contact with France and Switzerland have, over the centuries, led to the creation of an important commercial transit network which has favoured its present economic development.
This is the largest region of continental Italy, second only to Sicily. Its density of 174 inhabitants per sq km. makes it the fifth most densely populated region in Italy, and slightly under the national average.

Information about Scopello in the Province of Vercelli
Due to the ski resorts of Mera and the relating developments of hotels and second houses, this is the most important touristy centre of the middle valley.
During the second half of the XVII century imposing foundries were built.. Every year about 1000 quintals of copper were extracted by the mines of Alagna. It seems that the canon balls and bombs used by the army of Napoleon were produced here. Nowadays out of all these flourishing industries only the chimney situated along the banks of the river Sesia is left.
The Alpe di Mera ( 1500 meters), which during winter can be reached through a chair lift, offers several ski tows and slopes, both for beginners and for experienced skiers. In summer it is possible to reach the Trogo by car and from here carry on by feet or with a mountain bike along the several foot paths available. It is possible to arrive as far as Monte Ometto, Alpe Meggiana di Piode, Ramello, Frasso, Scopa, Piode and along the right bank of the river, Micciolo.
