Piedmont lies in a peripherical position with respect to the rest of Italy but its relative proximity to the sea and contact with France and Switzerland have, over the centuries, led to the creation of an important commercial transit network which has favoured its present economic development.
This is the largest region of continental Italy, second only to Sicily. Its density of 174 inhabitants per sq km. makes it the fifth most densely populated region in Italy, and slightly under the national average.

Information about Piode in the Province of Vercelli
This village has developed on both banks of the river Sesia, joined by the massive and characteristic bridge. Its name comes from the nearby caves of schist. From here comes the slabs, also called “piode”, which are still used to cover the roofs of the houses, in perfect harmony with the old rural architecture.
In the Parish of Saint Stephen there is one of the most impressive works painted by Antonio Orgiazzi, who in 1748 was required to decorate the volt of the dome and the presbytery. Piode’s dairy production is relevant. Its cheese, the “tome” in particular, are renowned and appreciated everywhere. During the summer season the “Minibasket Camp” is organised, a summer centre for all the young people, to teach sport and spend time together the fascinating mountain pasture of Meggiana is a destination very appreciated by walkers, and those who aren’t easily tired can continue until Rassa or in the opposite direction until Mera and then Scopello.
