Piedmont lies in a peripherical position with respect to the rest of Italy but its relative proximity to the sea and contact with France and Switzerland have, over the centuries, led to the creation of an important commercial transit network which has favoured its present economic development.
This is the largest region of continental Italy, second only to Sicily. Its density of 174 inhabitants per sq km. makes it the fifth most densely populated region in Italy, and slightly under the national average.
The Italian regions which border with Piedmont are Valle d'Aosta to the northwest, Lombardy to the east, Emilia-Romagna to the southeast and Liguria to the south.

Scopello, Alpe de Mera - Vercelli en Piemonte
L’offre du centre de ski de Scopello et Pila va de 600 à 1800 mètres d’altitude: des pistes de ski de fond du centre de Scopello aux sommets les plus hauts de l’Alpe de Mera, d’où l’on jouit d’une vue majestueuse sur le massif du Mont Rose. On peut arriver à Mera par le télésiège qui part de Scopello, ou en voiture jusqu’au parking situé dans la localité Trogo.
Les installations qui fonctionnent en ce moment sont au nombre de 5: 4 ski lift - Pian Rastò, Campetto, Camparient 1, Colma – et le télésiège, offrant, outre les pistes bleues du petit champ, des pistes rouges, pour un total d’environ 30 km de descentes battues.
Les travaux de restauration ont commencé et finiront d’ici le début de la saison 2006/2007. La station sera prête pour les passionnés de ski dès l’hiver 2005/2006, avec une grande installation d’enneigement programmé couvrant la quasi-totalité des pistes et ensuite avec trois nouveaux télésièges.
