Piedmont lies in a peripherical position with respect to the rest of Italy but its relative proximity to the sea and contact with France and Switzerland have, over the centuries, led to the creation of an important commercial transit network which has favoured its present economic development.
This is the largest region of continental Italy, second only to Sicily. Its density of 174 inhabitants per sq km. makes it the fifth most densely populated region in Italy, and slightly under the national average.
The Italian regions which border with Piedmont are Valle d'Aosta to the northwest, Lombardy to the east, Emilia-Romagna to the southeast and Liguria to the south.

Colle del Turlo - Vercelli in Piemonte
Start ab der Örtlichkeit Wold di Alagna (1271m): Zu Fuß oder mit dem Shuttle-Bus bis zum Ort Acqua Bianca (1497m), wo der wirkliche Wanderweg (Nr.7) zur Hirtenhütte beginnt. Nach rund 10 Minuten, in der Ortschaft Fum Bitz, in der sich das Casa del Parco befindet, schlägt man rechts den Eselspfad Nr. 7a in Richtung Alpe Faller und Passo del Turlo ein. In ungefähr 1h 15 – 1h 30 erreicht man über einen breiten und bequemen Weg die Alm (1984 m).
Kurz hinter der Alm ist der Wanderweg Nr. 7a einzuschlagen: Hier ist die Route unter praller Sonne und mit größerem Gefälle etwas anspruchsvoller; von weitem kann man gleich neben dem Hügel die gleichnamigen Seen bewundern. In ungefähr 3h –3h 30 ist der Colle del Turlo (2738 m) erreicht: Auf der anderen Seite des Hangs führt die bis jetzt zurückgelegte antike Militärstraße nach Macugnaga.
