Piedmont lies in a peripherical position with respect to the rest of Italy but its relative proximity to the sea and contact with France and Switzerland have, over the centuries, led to the creation of an important commercial transit network which has favoured its present economic development.
This is the largest region of continental Italy, second only to Sicily. Its density of 174 inhabitants per sq km. makes it the fifth most densely populated region in Italy, and slightly under the national average.
The Italian regions which border with Piedmont are Valle d'Aosta to the northwest, Lombardy to the east, Emilia-Romagna to the southeast and Liguria to the south.

Parco fluviale del Po - Vercelli in Piemonte
Il Parco Fluviale del Po, tratto vercellese-alessandrino, è un punto di eccellenza naturalistica per la presenza di colonie di uccelli stanziali e di passo, sia nelle aree boscate, sia sui ghiareti. Oltre agli aldeidi, vi nidificano colonie di sterne tra le più consistenti in Europa e rapaci quali il nibbio bruno e il falco di palude. Appartengono al Parco i Comuni di Trino, Palazzolo Vercellese, Fontanetto Po e Crescentino.
L'ambiente delle risaie permette di osservare facilmente l'avifauna e rappresenta un polo di attrazione notevole, anche grazie alle visite e alle escursioni guidate proposte dall’Ente. Il parco offre inoltre ai visitatori percorsi ben segnalati e semplici da effettuare in bicicletta o a cavallo ed è molto attivo nell’opera di informazione e di divulgazione.
