Piedmont lies in a peripherical position with respect to the rest of Italy but its relative proximity to the sea and contact with France and Switzerland have, over the centuries, led to the creation of an important commercial transit network which has favoured its present economic development.
This is the largest region of continental Italy, second only to Sicily. Its density of 174 inhabitants per sq km. makes it the fifth most densely populated region in Italy, and slightly under the national average.
The Italian regions which border with Piedmont are Valle d'Aosta to the northwest, Lombardy to the east, Emilia-Romagna to the southeast and Liguria to the south.

Artigianato - Vercelli in Piemonte
L’artigianato in Valsesia si può definire decisamente artistico, grazie ad un talento e ad una creatività, figli della tradizione che ha avuto origine nel XV secolo nel cantiere del Sacro Monte di Varallo. Qui, accanto ai grandi artisti, ha operato un folto gruppo di falegnami, fabbri, vetrai, scalpellini, stuccatori che hanno saputo tramandare la loro abilità di generazione in generazione, facendo di questa fantasiosa operosità un tratto del carattere valsesiano, come conferma anche don Luigi Ravelli nella sua celebre “Guida della Valsesia”.
Nel corso dell’800, il valore dell’artigianato viene riconosciuto anche grazie all’istituzione di enti come la Società d’Incoraggiamento allo Studio del Disegno in Valsesia e la Scuola Barolo, con il laboratorio di scultura in legno, animate dallo scopo di formare i giovani.
