Situated in Mediterranean Europe, Italy has land frontiers with France in the north-west, Switzerland and Austria in the north and Slovenia in the north-east. There is a great deal of variety in the landscape in Italy, although it is characterized predominantly by two mountain chains: the Alps and the Apennines. The former extends over 600 miles from east to west. It consists of great massifs in the western sector, with peaks rising to over 14,000 feet, including Monte Bianco (Mont Blanc), Monte Rosa and Cervino (the Matterhorn). Boboli e le ville - Firenze in Toscana
Nel 1549 Eleonora acquista palazzo Pitti. In esso Eleonora vede soprattutto la possibilità per la famiglia e per la corte di una vita negli ampi spazi aperti a verde della collina, lontano dalle muraglie serrate del Palazzo Ducale. Infatti già nell'anno seguente viene iniziato il giardino sui terreni della collina di Boboli, coltivata da orti e frutteti, e dove erano ubicate alcune cave di pietra. La parte della collina organizzata in quegli anni, quella in asse col palazzo, è definita ad ovest dalla linea dei bastioni voluti da Cosimo nel 1544.
Il disegno è dovuto al Tribolo che costituisce una delle figure chiave delle attività costruttive di Cosimo tra il 1540 e il '50. Il giardino, in questa prima fase nella quale forse è intervenuto anche l'Ammannati, comprende l'anfiteatro e il laghetto più in alto sulla collina, nella posizione dell'attuale laghetto del Nettuno.
