Situated in Mediterranean Europe, Italy has land frontiers with France in the north-west, Switzerland and Austria in the north and Slovenia in the north-east. There is a great deal of variety in the landscape in Italy, although it is characterized predominantly by two mountain chains: the Alps and the Apennines. The former extends over 600 miles from east to west. It consists of great massifs in the western sector, with peaks rising to over 14,000 feet, including Monte Bianco (Mont Blanc), Monte Rosa and Cervino (the Matterhorn). The Grand Duke and the Counter Reformation, 1570 in Florence
When compared to the decade between 1555-1565, the final years of Cosimo's reign saw much less building and construction. Cosimo had obtained the title of Grand Duke in 1569. The most important works were sponsored by Francesco and most of these were carried out in the suburban areas (Villa di Pratolino;Casino Mediceo, etc.) and other parts of the region (Logge del Vasari in Arezzo and works in Leghorn, Pisa and other cities).
Three years earlier in the Piazza del Mercato Vecchio, Vasari had built the long and narrow Loggia del Pesce, for fishmongers to show their goods. Today it stands in Piazza dei Ciompi, but has no actual purpose. The absolutist policies of Cosimo I focused his construction activities on "government" buildings, leaving little room, as it were, for religious buildings.
