The Marches is a region of Central Italy on the Adriatic side of the Umbria-Marches Apennines. Square in shape, its longer sides curve slightly north-east with the huge projection of the peninsula of Mount Conero.

The Marches is the sixth smallest region in Italy and borders with Emilia-Romagna and the San Marino Republic to the north, Tuscany, Umbria and Latium to the west, Abruzzo to the south and lies on the Adriatic Sea to the east.

Offida in the Province of Ascoli Piceno

Offida, leading place of production of the valuable red wine Rosso Piceno Superiore, offers one of the most interesting and best-preserved historical centres of the entire Piceno area.

Archeological diggings, dating back to the VIIth-VIth centuries a.C., offer evidence of the town's prehistoric origins. Its place-name dates back to ancient times and is thought to derive either from the word Ophis, which means "snake" or from Oppidum, a fortified Roman locality or even from the Etruscan word Ophyte. The nucleus of the modern town may have risen from the Castle founded by the Longobard people, between the VIth and IXth centuries. Today Offida is renowned throughout the Piceno area and beyond both for its valuable artistic and monumental richness and for its economic activities, connected principally to farm produce. Among local crafts, one of the most important products is merletto a tombolo, that is, handmade pillow-lace trimmings.

The entrance of the town is occupied by the mass ... Read More...
