The Marches is a region of Central Italy on the Adriatic side of the Umbria-Marches Apennines. Square in shape, its longer sides curve slightly north-east with the huge projection of the peninsula of Mount Conero.

The Marches is the sixth smallest region in Italy and borders with Emilia-Romagna and the San Marino Republic to the north, Tuscany, Umbria and Latium to the west, Abruzzo to the south and lies on the Adriatic Sea to the east.

History. The region is mainly mountainous, although the groups are not particularly high: the highest mountain is Mount Vettore (2,476 m.) part of the Sibillini Mountains on the Umbrian border. Information about Sant'Egidio alla Vibrata in the Province of Ascoli Piceno

Sant'Egidio alla Vibrata lies on the northern border of the Vibrata Valley (called "la Vbbrata" in local slang). The town has been renowned since the Roman period thanks to its skilful craftworkers and dyers of purpura (bright red colour) material and today it still holds a fore-front position in the textile industry and in the production of candy-coated almonds.

Among the town's artistic monuments we must suggest St. Egidio Abate Church (XIIth cent.), with three naves, whose layout reveals the succession of different artistic styles, from the apse dating from the second half of the XIIth century, to the 1524 façade. The last remodelling, commissioned by the Ascoli Bishop-Prince in 1555, is documented on a stone tablet. Among its furnishings, one finds a valuable wooden statue made at the end of the XVth century and representing the Madonna, a reliquary cross and a wooden crucifix from the XVIth century.

At the border of the inhabited centre we find the Madonna di Reggio Chapel, ... Read More...
