Lombardy covers approximately the centre of the Po Valley, as well as extending over the middle of the Italian Alps. It borders with Switzerland to the north, Emilia-Romagna to the south, Piedmont to the west and Trentino-Alto Adige and Venetia to the east. The region (23,856 sq km.) is only the fourth largest in Italy though it is unquestionably the most densely populated (c. 8,879,000); the population density (372 inhabitants per sq.km) makes Lombardy the second region, after Campania; 1/14 of the country's entire population is concentrated in the Province of Milan.
History. Three distinct natural zones can be fairly easily distinguished in the Lombardy region: mountain, hill and plain. Wallfahrtskirchen des Seriana-Tals - Bergamo
Die Wallfahrtskirche S. Patrizio erhebt sich auf einem Hügel in der Nähe von Colzate und ist für jeden sichtbar, der das Seriana-Tal zwischen Vertova und Casnigo durchquert. Zum Komplex gehört eine kleine, sehr antike Kirche, die im 13. Jahrhundert oder zu Beginn des 14. Jahrhunderts errichtet wurde. Alleinstehend auf steilen Felswänden scheint die Wallfahrtskirche eher eine antike Festung. Ihr Bau begann im Jahre 1580 und sie wurde ca. zwanzig Jahre später vollendet.
Jedes Jahr zu Fonleichnam, wird in Gandino eine großartige Prozession abgehalten, ander die Ordensbruderschaften und die Einheimischen teilnehmen.
Die prächtige Basilika von Gandino ist der S. Maria Assunta geweiht. Das bemerkenswerte künstleriche Patrimonium der Basilika und der anderen Krchen von Gandino wird im Museum der Basilika aufbewahrt.
