Lombardy covers approximately the centre of the Po Valley, as well as extending over the middle of the Italian Alps. It borders with Switzerland to the north, Emilia-Romagna to the south, Piedmont to the west and Trentino-Alto Adige and Venetia to the east. The region (23,856 sq km.) is only the fourth largest in Italy though it is unquestionably the most densely populated (c. 8,879,000); the population density (372 inhabitants per sq.km) makes Lombardy the second region, after Campania; 1/14 of the country's entire population is concentrated in the Province of Milan.
History. Three distinct natural zones can be fairly easily distinguished in the Lombardy region: mountain, hill and plain. I Vini della Valcalepio - Bergamo, Italy
La Valcalepio è una parte dell'area collinare compresa tra i fiumi Cherio e Oglio in provincia di Bergamo di notevole interesse paesaggistico e culturale.
Il nome "Calepio" deriverebbe dal termine greco "Kalos-Epias" che significherebbe "Terra buona,Terra dolce".
Il terreno è infatti fertile e la temperatura è mite per la vicinanza del lago. Questa presenza è ideale per la crescita della vite e la produzione di vini di qualità.
Scavi archeologici hanno attestato la presenza di insediamenti romani che si erano stanziati in questa accogliente vallata.
Oggi la Valcalepio si presenta come un'area molto attiva per la presenza di numerose industrie ed è molto conosciuta in tutta Italia soprattutto per la produzione di pregiati vini DOC, tra i quali spicca l'eccellente Moscato di Scanzo Passito DOC, vero punto di forza dell'enologia bergamasca.
