Lombardy covers approximately the centre of the Po Valley, as well as extending over the middle of the Italian Alps. It borders with Switzerland to the north, Emilia-Romagna to the south, Piedmont to the west and Trentino-Alto Adige and Venetia to the east. The region (23,856 sq km.) is only the fourth largest in Italy though it is unquestionably the most densely populated (c. 8,879,000); the population density (372 inhabitants per sq.km) makes Lombardy the second region, after Campania; 1/14 of the country's entire population is concentrated in the Province of Milan.

 

History. Three distinct natural zones can be fairly easily distinguished in the Lombardy region: mountain, hill and plain. Compresa tra l'ultimo lembo della pianura lombarda e la catena delle Alpi, la Bergamasca è terra di grande religiosità.
Meno nota sicuramente rispetto ad altri luoghi, si impose all'attenzione quando nel 1958 venne eletto papa proprio un bergamasco, Giovanni XXIII.

 

Incominciò un intensissimo afflusso di visitatori a Sotto il Monte, allora piccolo centro di campagna, un po’ in piano e un po’ in collina, e l'opinione pubblica scoprì le radici di un papa straordinario, il quale dal Vaticano tornava costantemente con il pensiero alla Bergamasca, alla sua gente, alle sue tradizioni.
In provincia di Bergamo i soli santuari dedicati alla Madonna sono ben centosei.
Alcuni sono notissimi, come quello di Nostra Signora della Fontana di Caravaggio, al quale giungono pellegrini da tutta Italia e da varie nazioni europee.
