Lombardy covers approximately the centre of the Po Valley, as well as extending over the middle of the Italian Alps. It borders with Switzerland to the north, Emilia-Romagna to the south, Piedmont to the west and Trentino-Alto Adige and Venetia to the east. The region (23,856 sq km.) is only the fourth largest in Italy though it is unquestionably the most densely populated (c. 8,879,000); the population density (372 inhabitants per sq.km) makes Lombardy the second region, after Campania; 1/14 of the country's entire population is concentrated in the Province of Milan.
History. Three distinct natural zones can be fairly easily distinguished in the Lombardy region: mountain, hill and plain. Valle Imagna: Santuario della Madonna della Cornabusa - Bergamo
Il santuario della Madonna della Cornabusa, in valle Imagna, situato dentro una vasta caverna, è, il più caratteristico di tutta la bergamasca. Da secoli è al centro della devozione degli abitanti della valle; meta di un gran numero di pellegrinaggi, una volta all'anno vi si raccolgono anche gli emigranti.
Per la sua fama vi giungono fedeli da altre regioni e da varie nazioni. Papa Giovanni XXIII fu particolarmente devoto alla Cornabusa, dove sostò in preghiera pochi giorni prima della sua elezione.
E anche uno dei motivi per cui il santuario è inserito negli itinerari che i pellegrini seguono alla ricerca dei luoghi cari a Papa Giovanni.
Chiuso tutto l’inverno a causa della strada impervia, il santuario della Cornabusa viene riaperto ogni anno la festa del Lunedì dell'Angelo.
Chi arriva per la prima volta, via via che si avvicina, nota il campanile, ma una volta giunto non trova traccia del santuario.
