Lombardy covers approximately the centre of the Po Valley, as well as extending over the middle of the Italian Alps. It borders with Switzerland to the north, Emilia-Romagna to the south, Piedmont to the west and Trentino-Alto Adige and Venetia to the east. The region (23,856 sq km.) is only the fourth largest in Italy though it is unquestionably the most densely populated (c. 8,879,000); the population density (372 inhabitants per sq.km) makes Lombardy the second region, after Campania; 1/14 of the country's entire population is concentrated in the Province of Milan.
History. Three distinct natural zones can be fairly easily distinguished in the Lombardy region: mountain, hill and plain. Santo Spirito (SIG. XVI-XIX) - Bergamo
En el interior en la cuarta capilla a derecha está custodida la pala “Madonna col Bambino in trono e santi”(1521), reconstruida sobre el proyecto del arquitecto de Bergamo Pietro Isabello.
La obra representa la Vírgen con el Niño rodeada de los sanctos (de izquierda) Caterina, Agostino, Sebastiano, Antonio Abate, a los pies del trono S. Giovannino que abraza con ternura El Místico Cordero. Una orquesta de ángeles domina la escena delicada que induce a la meditación sobre el misterio de la Incarnación, celebrado en la misma pala.
Dejada la iglesia de S. Spirito se sube Via Pignolo, donde al cruce con Via San Giovanni se encuentra la Iglesia de S. Bernardino que detrás del altar mayor guarda la pala “Madonna col Bambino e Santi” pintada por Lotto en 1521.
