Lombardy covers approximately the centre of the Po Valley, as well as extending over the middle of the Italian Alps. It borders with Switzerland to the north, Emilia-Romagna to the south, Piedmont to the west and Trentino-Alto Adige and Venetia to the east. The region (23,856 sq km.) is only the fourth largest in Italy though it is unquestionably the most densely populated (c. 8,879,000); the population density (372 inhabitants per sq.km) makes Lombardy the second region, after Campania; 1/14 of the country's entire population is concentrated in the Province of Milan.
History. Three distinct natural zones can be fairly easily distinguished in the Lombardy region: mountain, hill and plain. Caravaggio
Caravaggio è celebre perché vi nacque Michelangelo Merisi, detto appunto il "Caravaggio", uno dei massimi maestri della pittura di tutti i tempi. La sua fama è tuttavia legata al grandioso santuario innalzato nel punto dove la Madonna, il 26 maggio del 1432, apparve ad una donna del luogo, Giovanetta Varoli. Subito sgorgò una sorgente ed ora alla fonte, segno sensibile di quel lontano evento, attingono milioni di pellegrini
L’originario viottolo tra i campi di Caravaggio che conduceva al luogo del miracolo fu sostituito dallo splendido viale alberato che, largo quasi 30 metri, porta fino al santuario dalla statale Padana Superiore. Al centro dell'attenzione è il Sacro Fonte, collocato proprio sotto l'altare maggiore. Le statue della Madonna e di Giovanetta ricordano lo straordinario colloquio tra la Signora della Fontana e la contadina.
