Lombardy covers approximately the centre of the Po Valley, as well as extending over the middle of the Italian Alps. It borders with Switzerland to the north, Emilia-Romagna to the south, Piedmont to the west and Trentino-Alto Adige and Venetia to the east. The region (23,856 sq km.) is only the fourth largest in Italy though it is unquestionably the most densely populated (c. 8,879,000); the population density (372 inhabitants per sq.km) makes Lombardy the second region, after Campania; 1/14 of the country's entire population is concentrated in the Province of Milan.
History. Three distinct natural zones can be fairly easily distinguished in the Lombardy region: mountain, hill and plain. Wallfahrtskirchen des Brembana-Tals - Bergamo
Die Wallfahrtskirche der Madonna della Coltura in Lenna erhebt sich dort, wo sich früher eine Werkstatt befand. Im Oktober 1508 sah ein Lehrbursche, daß im Innern eines Lagers ein Freskengemälde der Madonna in grellem Licht erstrahlte.
Dieses Ereignis wiederholte sich, sodaß es auch der Meister und die übrigen Arbeiter bemerkten. Zum Zeichen der Verehrung und für die zahlreichen empfangenen Gnaden wurde beschlossen, die Wallfahrtskirche zu errichten, was 32 Jahre später in die Tat umgesetzt wurde. Besonders sehenswert ist der prächtige Holzaltar, in dessen Zentrum die wundertätige Freske aufbewahrt wird.
Das große Polyptychon mit dem Freskengemälde, das die Madonna mit dem Kind darstellt, befindet sich in einer Kirche des antiken Dorfes Cornello dei Tasso im Brembana-Tal.
Der Innenraurn der Kirche Santa Brigida, erste Pfarrkirche des ganzen Brernbana-Tals. Die Wallfahrtskirche Costa S. Gallo, die sich oberhalb S. Giovanni Bianco befindet.
