In the fourth and third centuries BC. it went to war with its neighbours (Latins, Etruscans, Aequi, Volsci, Sabini, Samnites, Umbrians, etc.) for supremacy over the area and the whole of central-southern Italy, until in 264 BC. it gained control of the peninsula.

Dome of Saint Peter's Basilica in Rome Italy

 

Saint Peters Dome Michelangelo planned the dome taking inspiration form those of the Pantheon and of St. Maria del Fiore in Florence. While the interior vaulting was later modified with mosaics on the design by Cavalier d'Arpino, Della Porta completed the exterior profile, for the most part faithful to the original Michelangelo design, between 1588 and 1593 with the lantern.

 

The Pieta`, considered "a wonderful thing" (Vassari), is the youthful work by the artist that he laid claim to with pride, the inscription along the belt that crosses the bust of the Virgin contains his name and Florentine origins. The sculptural group made from a single block of marble, commissioned on the 27th August, 1498 by Cardinal Jean Bilhe`res de Lagraulas and completed by the ed of the century, was probably for the burial of the prelate in the chapel, the sculpture was housed in the new choir and, from 1749, exhibited in the chapel of the Crucifix, today dedicated to the Pieta`.
