Founded by the Latin peoples around the eighth century BC. (tradition dates it to 753) near the Isola Tiberina, perhaps on the Palatine Hill, it was at first a monarchy until Tarquinius Superbus, the last king, was expelled and it became a Republic (509 BC.). In the fourth and third centuries BC. it went to war with its neighbours (Latins, Etruscans, Aequi, Volsci, Sabini, Samnites, Umbrians, etc.) for supremacy over the area and the whole of central-southern Italy, until in 264 BC. it gained control of the peninsula.

San Pietro in Vincoli, The old exodian Basilica was rebuilt by Sixtus III in 439-440 over older buildings. it name is derived from the Empress Licinia Eudoxia whose mother had the chains of St. Peter brought from Jerusalem to unite them to those which had chained the apostle during his imprisonment in Roma. Tradition has it that, on contact the two reliquaries miraculously welded together, as portrayed in the large painting in the centre of the ceiling of the nave (1705-6). The bronze funeral urn with the venerated reliquaries is on display in the crypt, rebuilt together with the presbyterial area during the second half of the 19th century.
