Latium (Lazio) is a region in Central Italy, on the Tyrrhenian side of the peninsula, except for a small strip on the Adriatic side. Lying to the west on the Tyrrhenian Sea, this region borders to the north with Tuscany, with Umbria and for a short stretch with the Marches. To the east Latium borders with Abruzzo and briefly with Molise and with Campania to the south; within its present limits it has not, however, geographical unity.
History. The morphology of Latium is very complex but four main sub-regions can be defined: the Tyrrhenian coast, the inland plains, the mountains of the Latium Pre-Apennines and a true Apennine area. The coast is mainly low and uniform, broken only by the spurs of Linaro point, Mount Circeo (541 m.) and the Gaeta headland: the Ponzian Islands, which are part of Latium, lie opposite the south coast.

Le Castagne del Monte Cairo - Frosinone nel Lazio
Sui contrafforti del monte Cairo sorge la famosissima abbazia di Montecassino. Le correnti turistiche si fermano in genere li, ma le cime, i valloni e i paesini che popolano le pendici del monte Cairo nascondono molti altri aspetti di grande interesse.Le vette maggiori e piu' interessanti del massiccio, tutto interessato da manifestazioni carsiche, sono il monte Cairo (1669) e il monte Obachelle (1466). Sulle parti sommitali la vegetazione e' scarsa, ma i panorami sono amplissimi e suggestivi: nelle giornate limpide si possono ammirare i monti dell'Abruzzo e le isole Pontine. Alle quote piu' basse si incontrano coltivazioni di cereali e olivi.
Salendo seguono i boschi di querce e piu' in alto di faggio. Non mancano i castagneti. Quelli nei pressi di Terelle vanta alberi secolari tanto da risultare il "monumento" caratteristico del paese e dare luogo, la seconda domenica di novembre ad una rinomata sagra della Castagna.
