Latium (Lazio) is a region in Central Italy, on the Tyrrhenian side of the peninsula, except for a small strip on the Adriatic side. Lying to the west on the Tyrrhenian Sea, this region borders to the north with Tuscany, with Umbria and for a short stretch with the Marches. To the east Latium borders with Abruzzo and briefly with Molise and with Campania to the south; within its present limits it has not, however, geographical unity.
History. The morphology of Latium is very complex but four main sub-regions can be defined: the Tyrrhenian coast, the inland plains, the mountains of the Latium Pre-Apennines and a true Apennine area. The coast is mainly low and uniform, broken only by the spurs of Linaro point, Mount Circeo (541 m.) and the Gaeta headland: the Ponzian Islands, which are part of Latium, lie opposite the south coast.

Aquino - Frosinone nel Lazio
Citata per la prima volta da Tito Livio nel 211 a.C., e da Plinio che ne vantava i possedimenti che aveva nelle Gallie, era ritenuta la città più importante tra Roma e Capua, per la sua posizione sulla via Latina e le possenti fortificazioni poi rase al suolo dalle invasioni barbariche di Totila e dei Longobardi. Risorta come feudo, venne continuamente contesa dai Duchi di Benevento e di Capua. All’inizio del X° secolo ebbe origine il potere della nobile casata dei De Aquino e sotto questa dinastia la città crebbe in forza e prestigio, tanto da sfidare il potere della vicina Abbazia di Montecassino e addirittura degli stessi Normanni. Dai Conti d’Aquino nacque San Tommaso che, nonostante i ripetuti tentativi della famiglia di distrarlo dalla vocazione religiosa, divenne uno dei Padri della Chiesa, il “dottore angelico” diffusore della “summa teologica”. Nativo di Aquino fu anche il poeta Decimo Giulio Giovenale, uno dei quattro grandi poeti satirici dell’antica Roma.
