Latium (Lazio) is a region in Central Italy, on the Tyrrhenian side of the peninsula, except for a small strip on the Adriatic side. Lying to the west on the Tyrrhenian Sea, this region borders to the north with Tuscany, with Umbria and for a short stretch with the Marches. To the east Latium borders with Abruzzo and briefly with Molise and with Campania to the south; within its present limits it has not, however, geographical unity.
History. The morphology of Latium is very complex but four main sub-regions can be defined: the Tyrrhenian coast, the inland plains, the mountains of the Latium Pre-Apennines and a true Apennine area. The coast is mainly low and uniform, broken only by the spurs of Linaro point, Mount Circeo (541 m.) and the Gaeta headland: the Ponzian Islands, which are part of Latium, lie opposite the south coast.

Guarcino - Frosinone nel Lazio
L’antica “Varcenum”, sorta come rifugio dei pastori della zona, appartenente alla Confederazione Ernica, oltre alla ubicazione geografica di importanza strategica per il passaggio nella Valle dell’Aniene era conosciuta come “il luogo pieno di acque”. Al tempo dei romani in Guarcino erano stati eretti i templi di Marte e di Apollo che, con l’avvento del cristianesimo, vennero sostituiti con le chiese dedicate alla Madonna e a San Michele Arcangelo. E’ situata a 625 metri di altitudine e l’isolamento dei luoghi attrasse molti eremiti, tra cui il più famoso, Sant’Agnello, divenne in seguito il patrono della città. Nato a Napoli negli anni compresi tra il 535 ed il 539, venne come eremita nella Valle del Cosa, dopo una vita di preghiera e carità nella sua città e nel Gargano. Visse per sette anni in una grotta a 800 metri di altitudine, fondando un ospizio alle porte di Guarcino, rimasto attivo per oltre sette secoli.
