This is one of the largest Italian regions (the sixth), an intermediate zone linking the north with the centre of the country, the part of continental Italy joining the Italian peninsula; as such, it is of great importance from the point of view of communications.

Stretching as far as the Adriatic sea to the east, Emilia Romagna borders with Veneto to the north-east, with Lombardy to the north and north-west, with Piedmont and Liguria to the west, with Tuscany to the south and with the Marches and the Republic of San Marino to the south-east, and there is close coincidence of administrative and physical boundaries, delineated by easily distinguishable natural features: the Po river to the north (except for the Oltrepò Mantovano, part of Lombardy), the Apennine ridge separating the Po Valley slopes from the Tuscany-Marches to the south, and the Adriatic coast to the east.

Information about Casalgrande, Emilia Romagna

The town is located in the foothills of the Apennines of the Province of Reggio Emilia and is an important ceramics manufacturing centre.

Casalgrande is the local capital of the ceramics industry. The town has nevertheless managed to preserve its historic part to the south of the National Road. This is centred round the old Castle which may date as far back as the year 1200.
What remains of the castle, after its destruction in 1557 by the Spanish army under Ottavio Farnese, is made up of a fortified court dating back to the 15th century with two square towers, siege defences and ruined battlements (the whole being in private ownership). The 14th-century Tower of Dinazzano stands on the top of a nearby hill, all that remains of an important fortified complex, enjoying an impressive view over the Reggio Emilia and Modena plains.
