Museum of Rural Life and Crafts, Montecchio Emilia, Emilia Romagna

 

The museum was set up in 1977 and gathers together objects and work tools from the rural world, particularly those connected with the production of Parmigiano-Reggiano (Parmesan) cheese.

 

Near the museum, you can visit two historical dairies used for cheese production.
One dates back to the 18th-century and has an open wood fire; the other is more recent and is operated by steam.
The “La Barchessa” association, which runs the museum, organises a number of cultural activities, including a school of traditional engraving, inlaying, and gilding.
