Situated in Mediterranean Europe, Italy has land frontiers with France in the north-west, Switzerland and Austria in the north and Slovenia in the north-east. The peninsula is surrounded by the Ligurian Sea, the Sardinian Sea and the Tyrrhenian Sea in the west, the Sicilian Sea and the Ionian Sea in the south and the Adriatic Sea in the east. Italian is the language of the majority of the population but there are minorities speaking German, French, Slovene and Ladino.

Salasco in the Province of Vercelli
The name of this village derives from the longobardic word “salo” (which means country mansion with rural buildings) to which ”asco” seems to have been added, a Ligurian augmentative suffix.
The Salasco castle, which was built in the XV century and today is the centre of agriculture firms, was probably established with a non military purpose but for the conservation of the agricultural products; built using a wide quadrilateral shape with cylindrical corner towers, it is in a good condition but sadly it’s not possible to visit its interior.
It is also possible to visit the Parish of Saint James the Apostle, from the second half of the XVIII century and Selve, the small hamlet where, in 1948, the director Giuseppe De Santis made the film “Riso Amaro”, produced by Dino De Laurentis.
In the Selve hamlet it is also possible to see another fort probably built in 1414, according to the date baked on a little plate above the entrance. This has a rectangular layout with an internal co ... Read More...
