Lying on the Tyrrhenian Sea in a sweeping curve between the mouth of the Garigliano and the Gulf of Policastro, Campania is chiefly a maritime region, a transit area and a node for the principal lines of communication which cross the Apennines, linking South Italy with the central-northern regions. It is the twelfth largest region, has the second highest number of inhabitants after Lombardy, and the highest density of population in Italy. It borders with Latium to the north-west, Molise to the north, Puglia to the north-east and Basilicata to the south. To the west it lies on the Tyrrhenian Sea.

Benevento in Campania - Molinara

 

Il paese, situato su un colle alle falde del monte Caffarello, è circondato da una natura rigogliosa ed incontaminata con una ricca fauna. Le origini di Molinara sono medievali anche se ritrovamenti archeologici fanno propendere per l’esistenza di un nucleo abitativo in età romana. Le prime notizie certe e documentate risalgono all’anno 1118 in epoca normanna, quando proprietario era Raimondo di Loritello. Fu feudo dei De Capua, dei Caracciolo, passando poi in possesso dei Muscettola di Spezzano che conservarono i loro diritti fino all’abolizione della feudalità.

 

Dopo l’Unità d’Italia fu aggregato alla provincia di Benevento. Fortemente danneggiato dal terremoto del 1962, il paese è stato completamente ricostruito “ex novo”, dovendo gli abitanti abbandonare il vecchio sito urbano di età medioevale, caratterizzato da stradine, slarghi e palazzi nobiliari, tra i quali il palazzo ducale.
