Lying on the Tyrrhenian Sea in a sweeping curve between the mouth of the Garigliano and the Gulf of Policastro, Campania is chiefly a maritime region, a transit area and a node for the principal lines of communication which cross the Apennines, linking South Italy with the central-northern regions. It is the twelfth largest region, has the second highest number of inhabitants after Lombardy, and the highest density of population in Italy. It borders with Latium to the north-west, Molise to the north, Puglia to the north-east and Basilicata to the south. To the west it lies on the Tyrrhenian Sea.
History. Campania can structurally be divided into two clearly defined zones stretching northwest-southeast parallel to the coast. Enogastronomia - Il torrone di Benevento, Campania
La “Cupedia”, ossia il progenitore del torrone, è uno dei cinque prodotti che per Marziale, nel I secolo, rappresentano Benevento, la città delle cinque C, ossia “Carduus et cepae” (cardone e cipolle), “Celebrata” (cervellate), “Cupedia” (copeta) e “Chordae” (corde).La classica copeta è composta da miele, albume d’uovo, mandorle o nocciole, amalgamati tra loro e cotti a bagnomaria.
Il torrone, ossia una copeta più raffinata ricoperta da naspro o da grana di zucchero, nasce successivamente e si diffonde nel XVII secolo in tre varietà: il Perfetto amore – ricoperto di cioccolato, limone o caffè; l’Ingranito – arricchito da confetti cannellini - ed il Torrone del Papa – composto da zucchero liquefatto, pinoli e frutta sciroppata.
Più tardi, nella metà dell’ottocento, compare il Torrone della Regina, destinato alla golosità di Ferdinando I di Borbone.
