Lying on the Tyrrhenian Sea in a sweeping curve between the mouth of the Garigliano and the Gulf of Policastro, Campania is chiefly a maritime region, a transit area and a node for the principal lines of communication which cross the Apennines, linking South Italy with the central-northern regions. It is the twelfth largest region, has the second highest number of inhabitants after Lombardy, and the highest density of population in Italy. It borders with Latium to the north-west, Molise to the north, Puglia to the north-east and Basilicata to the south. To the west it lies on the Tyrrhenian Sea.
History. Campania can structurally be divided into two clearly defined zones stretching northwest-southeast parallel to the coast. Inland rise the Campania and Lucanian Apennines, separated by the Sella di Conza (700 m.) and the upper Sele valley. Benevento in Campania - Pontelandolfo
L’abitato di Pontelandolfo, è situato in un paesaggio naturale fatto di oliveti e boschi. Diversi ritrovamenti archeologi, testimoniano che l’intera area era già abitata in età sannitico-romana e che nel periodo longobardo, divenne possesso di un Landolfo principe di Benevento dal quale ne mutuò il nome. L’attuale assetto urbano si sviluppò in epoca normanno-sveva attorno ad un imponente fortilizio di cui resta visibile la massiccia torre. Fu feudo nobile fino alla abolizione della feudalità.
Sotto Ferdinando II Borbone ripresero vigore le attività legate alla pastorizia ed all’artigianato in genere e fu incrementata la produzione dei lavori tessili e dei ricami di cui resta famoso il “panno-lana” di Pontelandolfo. All’indomani dell’Unità d’Italia, insieme al vicino paese di Casalduni fu interessato al fenomeno della repressione del brigantaggio, ricordati entrambi nella storia con l’eccidio del 14 agosto 1861.
