Lying on the Tyrrhenian Sea in a sweeping curve between the mouth of the Garigliano and the Gulf of Policastro, Campania is chiefly a maritime region, a transit area and a node for the principal lines of communication which cross the Apennines, linking South Italy with the central-northern regions. It is the twelfth largest region, has the second highest number of inhabitants after Lombardy, and the highest density of population in Italy. It borders with Latium to the north-west, Molise to the north, Puglia to the north-east and Basilicata to the south. To the west it lies on the Tyrrhenian Sea.
History. Campania can structurally be divided into two clearly defined zones stretching northwest-southeast parallel to the coast. Inland rise the Campania and Lucanian Apennines, separated by the Sella di Conza (700 m.) and the upper Sele valley. Italy - Information on Cusano Mutri in the Province of Benevento
Cusano Mutri, situated on the slopes of the Mount Matese, has its origins in the Norman period: it developed around the remains of an ancient castles and still keeps a medioval aspect. It was a feud of the Sanframondo, then of the Gaetani, the Carafa, the Colonna and finally of the Leone. Its historical centre is characterized by stone houses, decorated with baroque elements: it is particularly charming with its tiny alleys, small squares, churches, fountains and stairs.
Its economy is based on agriculture: it is famous for its chestnut trees and the rich production of funghi porcini and hams.
In September and October two important local events take place: the Mushroom Fair and the Chestnut Fair.
Particularly attractive for tourists is the “infiorata”, taking place on the day of Corpus Domini. The main streets are covered with local flowers arranged so that they portray religious images.
NOT TO BE MISSED:
1. Historical centre
2. Church of St. Giovanni Battista del IX sec.
