Lying on the Tyrrhenian Sea in a sweeping curve between the mouth of the Garigliano and the Gulf of Policastro, Campania is chiefly a maritime region, a transit area and a node for the principal lines of communication which cross the Apennines, linking South Italy with the central-northern regions. It is the twelfth largest region, has the second highest number of inhabitants after Lombardy, and the highest density of population in Italy. It borders with Latium to the north-west, Molise to the north, Puglia to the north-east and Basilicata to the south. To the west it lies on the Tyrrhenian Sea.
History. Campania can structurally be divided into two clearly defined zones stretching northwest-southeast parallel to the coast. Inland rise the Campania and Lucanian Apennines, separated by the Sella di Conza (700 m.) and the upper Sele valley. Italy - Information on Montefalcone Di Val Fortore in the Province of Benevento
The village borders on the province of Foggia and is situated in a land rich in springs and woodlands; it overlooks the highest part of the Fortore. Deeply damaged by earthquakes in 1456 and in 1962, it is divided into two urban areas: the oldest part developed around the ruins of the medieval castle.
It was a feud of Matteo de Lecto, it belonged afterwards to the Caracciolo and to the Loffredo families. It belonged then to the Duke of Sangro and the Prince of Rocella, who owned it up to the abolition of feudalism.
In 1861 it passed from the province of Foggia to the province of Benevento and, by royal decree of 22 January 1863, it took the name of Val Fortore.
It was the birthplace of Fra Marco, who was Carlo II of Anjou’s and Niccolò da Montefalcone’s personal confessor, and Boccaccio’s friend.
