Lying on the Tyrrhenian Sea in a sweeping curve between the mouth of the Garigliano and the Gulf of Policastro, Campania is chiefly a maritime region, a transit area and a node for the principal lines of communication which cross the Apennines, linking South Italy with the central-northern regions. It is the twelfth largest region, has the second highest number of inhabitants after Lombardy, and the highest density of population in Italy. It borders with Latium to the north-west, Molise to the north, Puglia to the north-east and Basilicata to the south. To the west it lies on the Tyrrhenian Sea.
History. Campania can structurally be divided into two clearly defined zones stretching northwest-southeast parallel to the coast. Inland rise the Campania and Lucanian Apennines, separated by the Sella di Conza (700 m.) and the upper Sele valley. Benevento in Campania - Pesco Sannita
Caratteristico paese posizionato su di un colle roccioso alla destra del fiume Tammaro, il paese di Pesco Sannita fino al 1948 era denominato Pescolamazza. I primi documenti che ne attestano l’esistenza risalgono al XII secolo, conosciuto come Pesculum, anche se alcuni ritrovamenti archeologici attesterebbero la presenza di un insediamento urbano già nel periodo romano.
Il paese conserva ancora intatto il centro antico, di aspetto tipicamente medioevale, con strade, slargi e viuzze che si intersecano tra di loro e sulle quali si addossano, l’una all’altra, le varie abitazioni. Feudo della famiglia Della Marra, poi dei Caracciolo e dei D’Aquino, restò fino all’abolizione dei diritti feudali nel 1806 ai Carafa. Con l’Unità d’Italia fu aggregato alla provincia di Benevento. Da vedere: centro storico, Chiesa del S.S. Salvatore, Chiesa della Madonna dell’Arco, Chiesa di S.Giuseppe.
