Situated in Mediterranean Europe, Italy has land frontiers with France in the north-west, Switzerland and Austria in the north and Slovenia in the north-east. The peninsula is surrounded by the Ligurian Sea, the Sardinian Sea and the Tyrrhenian Sea in the west, the Sicilian Sea and the Ionian Sea in the south and the Adriatic Sea in the east. Italian is the language of the majority of the population but there are minorities speaking German, French, Slovene and Ladino.
There is a great deal of variety in the landscape in Italy, although it is characterized predominantly by two mountain chains: the Alps and the Apennines. The former extends over 600 miles from east to west. It consists of great massifs in the western sector, with peaks rising to over 14,000 feet, including Monte Bianco (Mont Blanc), Monte Rosa and Cervino (the Matterhorn). Campoli Appennino - Frosinone nel Lazio
Sorge a 650 mt di altitudine, in posizione dominante la sottostante piana di Sora e del fiume Liri, sulle falde dei monti che dividono il Lazio dal parco Nazionale d’Abruzzo. La sua posizione è molto caratteristica: le sue case sono disposte ad anello, sui bordi di una grandiosa dolina imbutiforme, chiamata dai locali “il tomolo”. Tutto il suo territorio è disseminato di fosse doliniche, fra le quali: Fossa Micciola, vero anfiteatro roccioso straordinariamente suggestivo, e la Fossa Matura, che raggiunge i 180 metri di profondità e una larghezza di 250 metri. L’origine dell’abitato si fa risalire al medioevo, anche se nel suo territorio sono stati rinvenuti reperti molto antichi di epoca preromana e romana. Oggi il Paese è conosciuto soprattutto per la coltivazione e la raccolta del tartufo nero, che ha dato origine ad una attività economica, culinaria e turistica molto importante per l’economia locale.
