Situated in Mediterranean Europe, Italy has land frontiers with France in the north-west, Switzerland and Austria in the north and Slovenia in the north-east. The peninsula is surrounded by the Ligurian Sea, the Sardinian Sea and the Tyrrhenian Sea in the west, the Sicilian Sea and the Ionian Sea in the south and the Adriatic Sea in the east. Italian is the language of the majority of the population but there are minorities speaking German, French, Slovene and Ladino.
There is a great deal of variety in the landscape in Italy, although it is characterized predominantly by two mountain chains: the Alps and the Apennines. The former extends over 600 miles from east to west. It consists of great massifs in the western sector, with peaks rising to over 14,000 feet, including Monte Bianco (Mont Blanc), Monte Rosa and Cervino (the Matterhorn). Campi Bisenzio, Stagni di Focognano - Firenze in Toscana
Gli stagni di Focognano, al pari dell'A.N.P.I.L. Podere La Querciola, sono situati nella piana di Sesto F.no, porzione orientale della più vasta pianura che si estende tra Firenze e Pistoia, pur ricadendo amministrativamente nel territorio comunale di Campi Bisenzio. L'area protetta è stata istituita per tutelare un'area semi-naturale di importanza floristica e avifaunistica, già compresa in precedenti proposte di tutela.
Pur ricadendo ai margini di una zona intensamente urbanizzata - confina a nord con l'Autostrada A11 ed è separata dalla discarica di Case Passerini dal f. Acqualunga - gli stagni ospitano specie di flora, vegetazione e fauna degne di nota. È stata oggetto di recenti interventi di risistemazione ambientale, conclusi nel 1998, che hanno mantenuto la tipica morfologia degli stagni artificiali della piana, con arginature, sponde rettilinee e livello delle acque superiore al piano di campagna.
