Situated in Mediterranean Europe, Italy has land frontiers with France in the north-west, Switzerland and Austria in the north and Slovenia in the north-east. Italian is the language of the majority of the population but there are minorities speaking German, French, Slovene and Ladino.
There is a great deal of variety in the landscape in Italy, although it is characterized predominantly by two mountain chains: the Alps and the Apennines. The former extends over 600 miles from east to west. It consists of great massifs in the western sector, with peaks rising to over 14,000 feet, including Monte Bianco (Mont Blanc), Monte Rosa and Cervino (the Matterhorn). Massa Carrara en Toscane - Château Malaspina de Terrarossa
Le château de Terrarossa (Terre rouge) fait entre autre partie des oeuvres fortifiées qui ont été construites pour contrôler le réseau routier situé au fond de la vallée. L’implantation se développe le long de la “Via Francigena” au XIIème siècle, tandis que le grand palais fortifié date de la fin du XVIème siècle voulu par le premier marquis de Terrarossa, Fabrizio Malaspina. Il s‘agit d’une des plus grandes résidences de lafamille Malaspina. L’imposant édifice est réalisé à partir d’un plan quadrilatère avec quatre bastions corniers mais qui ne sont pas tous achevés. Celui-ci se déploie autour d’une cour et on y accède par un portail formant un arc de pierres en grès. Il se présente comme une construction nobiliaire: de nombreux appartements et salons aux voûtes d’arêtes.
