Situated in Mediterranean Europe, Italy has land frontiers with France in the north-west, Switzerland and Austria in the north and Slovenia in the north-east. Italian is the language of the majority of the population but there are minorities speaking German, French, Slovene and Ladino.
There is a great deal of variety in the landscape in Italy, although it is characterized predominantly by two mountain chains: the Alps and the Apennines. The former extends over 600 miles from east to west. It consists of great massifs in the western sector, with peaks rising to over 14,000 feet, including Monte Bianco (Mont Blanc), Monte Rosa and Cervino (the Matterhorn). Massa Carrara in Toscana - Pieve di Codiponte
La pieve di Codiponte, dedicata ai santi Cornelio e Cipriano, deve il suo aspetto attuale al restauro realizzato alla fine dell'Ottocento, che ha eliminato ogni segno successivo al Romanico. La pieve sorge su un probabile villaggio romano, divenuto poi sito funzionale alla via Luni-Lucca. La parte più interessante della Pieve è costituita dalla decorazione scultorea dei capitelli con intrecci, margherite a sei punte, cerchi concentrici, motivi vegetali, tipici dell'arte longobarda e carolingia.
A tale decorazione scultorea si affiancano elementi tipici dell'età romanica, conferma della collocazione di Codiponte, il cui toponimo deriva dal ponte edificato dal XII secolo, sulle grandi direttrici viarie della via Francigena. Da visitare anche: la pieve di S. Lorenzo e l'eremo di Minucciano (a pochi chilometri da Casola) che offrono al turista l'occasione di rivivere la profonda e tranquilla spiritualità medioevale.
