Situated in Mediterranean Europe, Italy has land frontiers with France in the north-west, Switzerland and Austria in the north and Slovenia in the north-east. Italian is the language of the majority of the population but there are minorities speaking German, French, Slovene and Ladino.
There is a great deal of variety in the landscape in Italy, although it is characterized predominantly by two mountain chains: the Alps and the Apennines. The former extends over 600 miles from east to west. It consists of great massifs in the western sector, with peaks rising to over 14,000 feet, including Monte Bianco (Mont Blanc), Monte Rosa and Cervino (the Matterhorn). I Natali di Cristoforo Colombo a Pradello - Piacenza in Emilia Romagna
Bettola fraz. Pradello vanta il luogo d'origine di Cristoforo Colombo, a lui si deve la scoperta dell 'America: questo evento assieme all'apparizione della Madonna poco prima del 1500, resero Bettola importante luogo di pellegrinaggio e, assieme a tutta la vallata, di notevole rilevanza commerciale e di contatto tra Milano e i porti liguri, zone di scalo per merci provenienti dalle Americhe. Bettola lo ricorda con una statua ed un museo a Pradello.
Pradello vanta i natali di Cristoforo Colombo: già dai primi anni del '400 : secondo documenti la famiglia Colombo possedeva beni ancor oggi individuabili come "terre rosse " al di là del "rio Ossa" dove svettava una torre alta una 40^ di mt. chiamata da sempre la "torre di Colombo": lo stesso scopritore menzionava spesso nei suoi scritti queste terre aggiungendo in calce alla sua firma la dicitura in latino "de terra rubra" la terra rossa così battezzata per il colore rossiccio del terreno.
