History of Campania
The Greeks were the first to set up organised colonies in Campania. In the 6th century BC the Etruscans expanded as far south as Capua and the surrounding area.
Its proximity to Rome and its beauty meant that the Campania "felix", as it was known in the Augustan era, became a favourite haunt of emperors and patricians. With the fall of the Empire, the Middle Ages were characterised by the clashes between the Lombard Principality of Benevento and the Byzantine Duchy of Naples, while Amalfi became the first of the four Italian Marine Republics. From the 12th century, Campania followed the fortunes of the Kingdom of Sicily, Naples or the Two Sicilies - the name changed as time went on - until the Bourbon lands were annexed to the Kingdom of Sardinia after the expedition of the Corps of One Thousand led by Giuseppe Garibaldi in the 19th
