Information on Tronzano in the Province of Vercelli
This an agricultural and industrial centre, on the left bank of the Cavour canal in the vast plane of Vercelli.
The church of Saint Peter rises in the cemetery situated on the margins of the town with all the beauty of a national monument. It has three naves terminating with semicircular apses and is definitely of Romanic-Lombardic style, which was built in the XI century and became the parish of Tronzano Superiore.
The right apse was destroyed to create a connection between the church and the bell tower, back element is a square layout, five floors high, with the basement in green-grey stone blocks. At the beginning of the XIII century, abandoned and heavily damaged, it was used as shelter by the knights coming from France and directed towards the Holy Land during the Crusades; next it was recovered by the Brotherhood of Saint Anthony. In the interior the main alter is enriched by a 1439 painting of the Virgin with the Saints Peter and Paul.
The following decorations are very interesting: a Gordian knot in the right capital, a flower with eight petals in the left one, a cross in shape of TAU in almond. Surprisingly in 1856 a sepulchre of the Roman era was discovered along the road between the castle and the cemetery, whilst in 1937 there was the unexpected discovery of a XIII century fresco which appeared from the plaster on the right side of the church.
The parish of the saints Peter and Paul (1732 – 1752) is of very different proportions: it is situated in the centre of the village, on the edge of the main square on which rises the Town Hall Palace, it has a single nave, from the sides of which rise four alters. The internal frescoes and the external part of the bell tower have been recently restored. Another important legacy from the past is the church of Saint Martin, which dates back to 1256 after two pre-existing villages were abandoned. It was characterised by a beautiful arcade built on the façade which fell down in 1960. There are four frescoes from the XVII century which are important and a note worthy choir enriched with a wooden baroque composition showing the Last Supper.
At the extreme borders of Tronzano in the countryside around the road going to Trino, stands a little church called “del Molinetto”, the origin of which is unknown: recent renovations have brought it back to its old splendour. Another renovation work was the church of Saint Gratus in Salomino which conserves the simplicity of a small country church.
