Information about Sant'Ilario d'Enza in the Province of Reggio Emilia
The Town of Sant'Ilario d'Enza is situated along Via Emilia, at the spot where the Enza River divides the Province of Reggio Emilia from the Province of Parma. The origin of Sant'Ilario d'Enza dates back to the time of the Roman Empire. During the Dark Ages, it was called Sant'Eulalia, and was ruled by the Lombards, whose traces can still be found in the archeological discoveries made in the area, the local dialect, and the names of localities. In 1428 Sant'Ilario, together with Calerno, a village which had been governed by Reggio until that time, became part of the Duchy of Este. Sant'Ilario later became an independent town in the Marquisate of Montecchio.
Under the first Kingdom of Italy, Sant'Ilario was an independent town with the outlying villages of Campegine, Cadè, Gaida, Calerno, and Taneto. After the restoration of the House of Este in 1814, Duke Francesco IV annexed Sant'Ilario to Montecchio. By decree of the dictator Farini, in 1860 Sant'Ilario d'Enza was reinstated as an independent town with the outlying village of Calerno. Today Sant'Ilario is proud of its local products, which include Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese, Lambrusco wine, and famous cured pork products.
