Information about Bibbiano, Emilia Romagna

The town is situated in the centre of a rich and productive area in the heart of the Province of Reggio Emilia.

The first settlements founded by the Etruscans date back to between the 5th and 6th centuries BC.
Three hundred years later Roman colonisation began with the construction of the first system of connecting roads. During the 11th century Bibbiano became part of the lands administered by Matilda, Countess of Canossa. After her death in 1115 the struggles for succession continued for more than 300 years. In the 15th century, the area of Bibbiano suffered a succession of raids by both French and Spanish troops. The subsequent period was characterised by rural depopulation (flight from the land) and the resulting famines. It has been a Local Council under the Italian Republic since 1861.
