Island of Elba: Church of Santo Stefano

The church of Santo Stefano a Magazzini, once called "alle Trane", is the finest example of Romanesque religious architecture on the island. Archeologic finds dating from Roman times have been excavated in the area and the name "TRANE" is probably of Etruscan derivation ATRANE-NIA, later changed into latin ATRANUS, as suggested by Pieri.

The building dates from the second half of the 12th century and presents neat walls with regular rows in alberese (a local sedimentary marly calcaroeus) white ivory.
The inside is very simple: a single nave with apse once covered by wooden trusses.
