Piombino und die altstadt - Toskana
Antiker Hafen von Falesia, später Stadtherrschaft und Fürstentum unter der Appiani, und Anfang des 19. Jahrhunderts von Elisa Bonaparte, der Schwester Napoleons regiert: Piombino bewahrt zahlreiche historische und künstlerische Zeugnisse aus dem Mittelalter und der Renaissance.
Im historischen Zentrum, das von einer beeindruckenden Stadtmauer eingeschlossen ist, gibt es viele bedeutende Denkmäler, wie die Kirchen und die Befestigungsbauwerke Torrione und Rivellino. Der Palazzo Nuovo aus dem 19. Jh. liegt innerhalb der imposanten Festungsanlage, die unter Mitwirkung von Leonardo da Vinci errichtet wurde.
Er ist Sitz des Museums, dem wichtigsten Ausstellungsraum der Parks des Val di Cornia, und besitzt über 2.000 Funde aus vorgeschichtlicher, etruskischer und römischer Zeit. Gepflasterte Gassen führen zur imposanten Burg, einem großartigen Bau, dessen Kern aus der Zeit um 1200 stammt. Auch hier werden bedeutende Funde ausgestellt.
Von der direkt am Meer gelegenen Piazza Bovio hat man einen wunderbaren Ausblick auf die Küste und die Inseln des Toskanischen Archipels. An den alten Plätzen und in den Straßen, die bis zum Meer herunter führen, kann man typische Lokale und Gasthäuser finden, die eine hervorragende Meeresküche anbieten.
